It all started when...
My mother read to me and took me to the tiny public library in our village in Northern New York State. Now many years later...
I’ve finished my 32nd year in libraries, public, college, but mostly school in June of 2020. The last few have been middle school, from which I’ve recently retired. My education includes a Ph.D. in children's & YA literature/literacy from the Ohio State University (OSU). I'm so proud to have been mentored by both Rudine Sims Bishop and Janet Hickman. It doesn't get any better than that. I've also loved the last 15 years teaching adjunct for OSU and Kent State University. I have the unique experience of having taught from PreSchool to Grad School.
For the past 25+ years I've written numerous articles, columns, book reviews, and co-published 2 books just recently on children's & YA literature. And my third book, Profiles of Resilience: Books for Children and Teens That Center the Lived Experience of Generational Poverty is both autobiographical and a resource book for teachers and librarians who teach and provide services for economically disadvantaged children! I've also presented nationally & internationally, and consult for libraries, schools, and bookstores, as well. In addition, I’m a seminar presenter and conference presenter on the best in children’s literature for the Bureau of Education and Research. Be sure to catch one of my virtual seminars or conferences! (see the home page for links)
My past experience on book committees include several statewide committees in both Ohio and New York State, fiction, nonfiction, and life time achievement awards. Nationally, I've served on a 2-year term of the Notables Children's books, one year on the Geisel Award, 2 years on the Coretta Scott King Jury, 2 years on the Youth Stonewall Committee (chairing for the second year), YALSA's Nonfiction Award committee, and the 2020 Caldecott committee -- what a dream come true this was! I’m currently slated to begin serving on the 2026 Scott O’Dell committee.
In the past I've done a variety of things, including take flying lessons and volunteering for NASA. In my spare time I read, travel, spend time with my family, and play drums (an old passion recently renewed, and currently assembling a new band…stay tuned for gig dates). Wonder what I'll decide to try next……....
